In our independent study, we decided to meet every week instead of every other week in order to actively engage in the scholarship, propose questions, and launch our discussions on the applicability of multimodality in the writing classroom and as a pedagogy. This is the syllabus we formed together:

In our independent study, we wrote a response to the scholarship, and we looked at our meeting space as a time to confront our own concerns while, hopefully, coming to conclusions about the text(s). Each week we proposed 2-3 questions about the chapters / articles, and those questions, ultimately, led to further thinking. Attached below are our week-to-week responses (based on the scholar):

In our independent study, we were also asked to compose a midterm project:
Instructions: For the midterm project, you will develop and design a multimedia/multimodal pedagogical application (a unit, assignment sequence, class activity or exercise) and will submit an accompanying theoretical rationale. The theoretical rationale or “justification” paper (7-10 pages) should accompany the class materials and should communicate the theoretical reasoning behind the application.
The thought process behind the midterm assignment was to create something that combined theory with practical pedagogical application. We wanted to approach the scholarship (and our responses to the scholarship), and we wanted to be able to compose something we could use in our writing classrooms.
Casey's midterm was based on aural social narratives. The goal: to better understand and explain the rhetorical affordances, rhetorical complexity, and technological skills to compose within the aural mode.
Shane's midterm was based on aligning multimodal pedagogy with assessment. The goal: to use multimodal pedagogy as a way to push against traditional assessment in order to cultivate a more effective form of evaluation that aligns more with what multimodal pedagogy affords.
